English Toy Terrier Characteristics

Brief information

  • A rare breed, on the verge of extinction;
  • Balanced and calm animals;
  • Intelligent and smart.

Character

The ancestor of the English toy terrier is the now defunct black and tan terrier. These small dogs have helped to clear the streets of England of rats for several centuries – in other words, they often served as rat catchers. Moreover, the black and tan terrier even became one of the main participants in rat fights. Later, when such entertainment was banned, dogs were used as decorative pets, apparently due to their small size and pleasant nature.

In the 20th century, breeders decided to divide black and tan terriers into several classes depending on weight. So in 1920, the Manchester Terrier officially appeared, and a few years later, the English Toy Terrier. Today, these breeds are also closely related, and often Manchester Terriers are used to restore the Toy gene pool.

Behaviour

The English Toy Terrier, despite its miniature size, has a balanced character and a stable psyche. However, the often occurring small trembling in moments of excitement is not considered a breed defect.

The English Toy loves to be the center of everyone’s attention and will be happy to spend time with his family. But do not immediately classify it as a decorative breed. Still, the ancestors of this dog were excellent rat-catchers and coped with their duties with a bang. Echoes of the hunting past make themselves felt: a dog can snap even at large relatives without regard to their dimensions. A brave and bold dog needs timely socializationso that he calmly reacts to other animals and does not rush barking at strangers.

The English Toy, like other representatives of miniature breeds, can have a “Napoleon complex”. The dog is convinced of its superiority and does not always evaluate its strength objectively.

Representatives of the breed get along well with children if the kids do not bother them. A perky pet will support games both in the house and in the fresh air. It is very important to explain to the child the rules of behavior with animals so that he does not accidentally injure the pet.

The English Toy Terrier can be quite jealous. It all depends on the nature of the particular dog and its upbringing. But, if the puppy appears in a house where there are already other animals, the likelihood that they will become friends is much higher.

Care

The short coat of the English Toy Terrier is easy to care for. It should be periodically wiped with a damp towel and bathed as it gets dirty. During the molting period, the pet is combed out with a massage brush.

It is important to take care of your dog ‘s nails and mouth. Miniature breeds are more prone to early tooth loss than others.

Conditions of detention

The English Toy Terrier is a small, energetic dog. She can be accustomed to a diaper, but walks cannot be canceled, twice a day is a mandatory minimum. The dog does not tolerate cold weather, so in winter you should take care of insulated clothing, and walking time can be reduced.
