Character

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an American dog breed that is the official symbol of the state of Maryland. The history of the breed began quite a long time ago: in the 19th century, a small ship wrecked in the Chesapeake Bay. The crew of a passing ship managed to save not only people, but also a couple of Newfoundland puppies who traveled with them.

The locals drew attention to the remarkable nature of these dogs and their working qualities and decided to use them in breeding. Newfoundlands were crossed presumably with Kindhounds and Retrievers . As a result of this union, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was obtained.

These hardy, agile and very athletic dogs are very popular in their homeland – in the USA. The Chesapeake is an excellent hunting assistant, it works equally well on land and in water even in the cold season. Short thick wool does not let water through due to a special oily layer.

Behaviour

Compared to the Labrador Retriever , the Chesapeake is a rather reserved and aloof dog. In any case, it may seem so to a stranger. In fact, this is an affectionate and devoted pet to its owner.

His upbringing must be dealt with from childhood. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever needs early socialization and training. If the owner does not have enough experience, it is better to entrust this to a professional. Representatives of the breed quickly learn commands and are generally easy to learn. By the way, they are often used as service dogs in the USA.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has a calm disposition and does not show aggression. He will never attack first, but he will not let himself be offended either.

Experts recommend getting a pet of this breed to families with school-age children: the dog will be happy to participate in their games. But with babies, communication should be careful; it is extremely undesirable to leave small children alone with an animal.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever gets along well with pets in the house. He will respect older relatives, and educate younger ones.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever Care

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is easy to care for. His thick short hair does not need to be cut – it is periodically combed out to get rid of the fallen hairs. They bathe a pet quite rarely – 3-5 times a year.

Before getting a dog of this breed, pay attention to its features: the oily layer that protects the coat from water has a special smell.

Conditions of detention

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a very active dog. American breeders do not welcome his content as a companion, especially since this breed is not suitable for life in a city apartment. The free-spirited Chesapeake should spend several hours a day outdoors, preferably in a field or forest, to vent his energy.
