Character

In the 19th century, there were two types of bassets in France: the dense and relatively large Norman and the lighter Artois. Deciding to develop a new breed, the breeders crossed two Bassets and added French hound blood to them. The result of this experiment was the emergence of a new breed of dog – the Artesian-Norman Basset. True, it was almost immediately divided into two types. Dogs with straight legs were intended for work, and animals with curved limbs were for exhibitions.

According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale standard , the Artesian-Normandy Basset should have semicircular, muscular paws. It is curious that the height of modern animals is lower than their ancestors, by about 20 cm.

Behaviour

The first thing that catches your eye when you get acquainted with the Artesian-Norman Basset is its sluggishness, incredible calmness and poise. It seems that nothing can bring this dog off balance. Some seriously may decide that pets are lazy. But this is not so at all! In fact, the Artesian-Norman Basset is active and playful. It’s just that he will get no less pleasure from what lies on the couch next to his beloved owner. The dog does not need to be entertained, it will adapt itself to the rhythm of family life.

Artesian-Norman Basset is gentle with all members of his “flock”, but the most important thing for him is the owner. Therefore, it is important that it is the owner of the dog who raises the puppy. Moreover, it is desirable to start training from an early age. Some representatives of the breed can be very capricious, and it is necessary to show them who is in charge in the house.

The good-natured and peaceful basset treats children with understanding. He can endure pranks and games of kids for a long time. Therefore, dogs of this breed have gained a reputation as good nannies.

As a rule, there are no problems with other animals in the house. Throughout the history of development, the Artesian-Norman Basset was kept in a pack, was hunting with relatives, so that he easily finds a common language with other dogs. Yes, and he is also condescending to cats. If the neighbor does not bother him, then they are likely to make friends.

Basset Artésien Normand Care

The short coat of the Artesian-Norman Basset requires little maintenance. Dogs are rubbed weekly with a damp hand to remove loose hairs.

Only the ears of the pet deserve special attention. They need to be inspected every week, cleaned as needed. The fact is that hanging ears, since they are not sufficiently ventilated, are prone to the development of infectious diseases and inflammation.

Conditions of detention

The Artesian-Norman Basset is a versatile dog in terms of living conditions. He feels equally comfortable both in a city apartment and in a private house. A pet is unlikely to require many hours of walks from the owner, and in cold weather, he would rather prefer a cozy warm house.
