Brief information

  • There are two varieties of the breed that differ in ears;
  • Playful, cheerful;
  • They can be very jealous.

Character

The Continental Toy Spaniel is a companion dog and a real aristocrat. Researchers claim that the breed was bred in the 19th century, and its homeland is two countries at once – Belgium and France.

Interestingly, the Continental Toy Spaniel, unlike many of its congeners, was never designed to work. Small dogs have always been decorative. And two hundred years ago, only noble and wealthy families could afford their maintenance.

The Continental Toy Spaniel comes in two varieties: the Papillon (or Papillon) with straight ears and the Phalene with lowered ears. By the way, from French “papillon” is translated as “butterfly”, and “falen” – “moth”.

A dog of this breed is one of the best candidates for city life. It is suitable for both families with small children and elderly single people. Active, energetic and agile toy spaniels will not let anyone get bored! They never seem to get tired. Even a sleepy dog is ready to support any game offered by the owner. Let this not surprise you. The owner for the toy spaniel is a real deity, and the pet simply does not dare to refuse him.

Behaviour

The love of the toy spaniel for the “leader” is so strong that he is often jealous of him for other family members. It usually manifests itself in childhood. If you notice that the puppy growls and snaps at someone from the household, in no case do not laugh or encourage such behavior, no matter how cute he may look. In the most neglected cases, a matured jealous dog can even bite! It is necessary to correct undesirable behavior from its first manifestations: if you start this problem, it will be extremely difficult to re-educate your pet.

However, it is not difficult to train a toy spaniel, but only if the owner is sensitive and attentive. It is simply impossible to raise a dog of this breed in a different way: through force, it will not do anything.

The Toy Spaniel is good with children with whom he grew up together. The dog will have to get used to the newborn baby. It is very important to show the pet that the child that has appeared is by no means a competitor, but a new member of the “pack”.

Care

To keep your Continental Toy Spaniel looking well-groomed, it is recommended that you take your dog to a groomer. Representatives of the breed usually make out the muzzle and ears.

The thick coat of toy spaniels should be brushed two to three times a week. During periods of active molting – in autumn and spring – the procedure is performed almost every day.

Conditions of detention

The Toy Spaniel is a miniature dog. She gets along well even in a small apartment. Despite the energy, the pet will not require many hours of walks. But you need to walk with him several times a day for at least an hour.
