The cat is hiding: what to do?

Almost all owners noticed that their cats periodically hide in shelters. Such shelters can be closets, the space behind the curtains, under the bed or behind the sofa, and even the most seemingly inconceivable cracks. Why is the cat hiding and what should the owner do in this case?

Why do cats hide?

Almost any cat will rush to take cover if it feels threatened. Anxiety or excessive excitement of the owner, chaos and disorder of the house may well become triggers. Also, cats often hide when moving to a new home, even in the company of their beloved owners.

Another good reason to hide even for a well-balanced cat is the appearance of strangers in the house.

And, of course, cats that got into a new family often hide. Especially when it comes to an adult cat.

What to do if the cat is hiding?

  1. First of all, it is important to know what not to do. You can’t force a cat out from hiding. Of course, if staying there does not threaten her life or health – for example, a fire in the house.
  2. Before adopting a new cat or kitten, close access to dangerous places.
  3. If you brought home a new pet or moved into a new home, your cat it will take timeto familiarize yourself with the surroundings. Be patient and give the purr a chance. Sometimes, especially if we are talking about an adult cat, it takes several weeks. Don’t be intrusive, but encourage any kind of curiosity.
  4. Kittens tend to be more curious and less reserved, but can also be shy at first. If possible, fine take a couple of kittens from the same litter: together they feel more secure and less inclined to hide.
  5. If you are planning repairs, rearranging furniture or other global changes, it is better to close the cat in a small room as far as possible from the epicenter of action and provide her with food, water, a couch or a house, a tray and toys.
  6. If you have moved, but your cat is used to walking outside (although this is not the safest activity for a purr), the first time don’t let the cat out of the house. According to statistics (K. Atkins, 2008), 97% of cats in such a situation are lost and do not return to their owners.
