Types of Aquarium Plants

Eriocaulon setaseum

Eriocaulon setaceum or Eriocaulon bristle-leaved, scientific name Eriocaulon setaceum. It comes from Southeast Asia, where it grows in wetlands of rivers. Currently, the natural range extends all the way to Australia. Considered difficult to maintain. It is not easy to cultivate even for experienced aquarists.

The plant forms a powerful vertical stem dotted with thin thread-like leaves, the number of which is compacted towards the crown, forming a “cap” or corolla. Forms many side shoots, forming dense thickets. Unlike most stem plants, Eriocaulon setaseum is not recommended for pruning. It is better to replace the old plant with a new sprout or a cutting. In this case, the length of the cutting should not be more than 5 cm. Otherwise, a large number of additional roots will appear in the lower part, which adversely affects the appearance. Its slow growth rate and unusual leaf texture make it a good choice for professional aquascaping.

Favorable conditions for growth are achieved in very soft water and acidic substrate, it is advisable to use special soil for the aquarium. It is important to maintain a balanced nutrient content and especially pay attention to sufficient amounts of nitrate (5–15 mg/l), phosphate (1–2 mg/l), iron and trace elements. Lighting is high. Additional introduction of carbon dioxide is mandatory.
