Origin story

The breed was bred in the nineteenth century. She is perhaps one of the brightest descendants of the Breton hounds, along with close relatives – the Breton griffons. This breed owes its small size, short stature and charming muzzle to its other ancestors – Basset Vendée. Despite its popularity back in the nineteenth century, the breed gained national recognition only in the thirties of the twentieth century.

The Breton Fawn Basset is a small, stocky dog ​​that is very active and energetic for its size. Combining tirelessness and lively temperament, these small dogs have become one of the best hunting dogs in France. Exceptional hunting qualities have helped representatives of the breed to achieve numerous prizes in rabbit hunting.

Description

These small cute dogs have an elongated body, fairly short paws. The color of a typical representative of the breed can vary from golden-wheat to red-brick. The standard also allows a few black hairs scattered over the back and ears. Breton Fawn Bassets sometimes have a small white star on their chest, but this is a fault. The head of the basset is rather large in relation to the body, elongated. The ears are lowered, covered with softer and shorter hair, their tips are pointed. The eyes, as well as the strokes, and the nose are dark in color. The coat of the representatives of the breed is hard, no fluffiness is allowed.

Character

Breton fawn bassets have a light disposition, they are sociable, affectionate and balanced. Despite the fact that dogs are passionate hunters, they easily adapt to any living conditions and can be kept as companions. Nevertheless, on the hunt, they are fearless and hardy dogs, real helpers for their owners. Disqualifying signs at shows for dogs of this breed is aggressiveness or cowardice.

It is quite possible to keep the Breton Basset in a city apartment, but only on condition of active walks for a couple of hours daily.
