Character

The American Hairless Terrier is a fairly young breed of dog, it was bred in 1972. It is believed that its first representative was a dog named Josephine. She was born into a family of purebred Rat Terriers, but as a result of a mutation, she was the only hairless puppy in the litter. The owners appreciated the advantages of keeping such a dog and decided to try to breed a new breed.

Representatives of this breed have inherited the best qualities of terriers from their ancestors: they are active, curious, energetic and restless. These dogs are easy to train and will gladly follow the commands of the owner. The American Hairless Terrier is very sociable. The dog perfectly understands and feels the owner. Therefore, even a person with little experience in breeding animals is able to train a terrier. Many owners note the incredible quick wit and intelligence of the breed.

Behaviour

Muscular by nature, the American Hairless Terrier is famous for its activity. These dogs are the kind that can’t sit still. Therefore, the attention of the owner is especially important to them, they crave it. Left alone at home, the American Hairless Terrier will be bored and bored. This dog is not suitable for people who spend too much time at work and have to leave the pet alone for a long time. At this time, of course, he will find an interesting occupation for himself, but the owner is unlikely to like the result.

The sociability and curiosity of terriers made them extremely friendly pets. They easily manage to find a common language with other animals, even with cats. The American Hairless Terrier especially loves children, he is ready to play with them for hours on end.

American Hairless Terrier Care

The American Hairless Terrier has sensitive skin due to the lack of hair and undercoat. Related to this is the special care that is necessary for representatives of the breed.

The owner of the dog should be especially careful and monitor the condition of the pet’s skin. Abrasions and scratches must be treated in time to prevent the development of infection.

Representatives of the breed need bathing and wiping with wet wipes. However, when choosing products, pay attention to their hypoallergenicity and natural composition. Incorrectly selected products can cause allergies.

Conditions of detention

The American Hairless Terrier is suitable for keeping in an apartment, but needs daily long walks. This dog loves outdoor activities.

Particular attention should be paid to clothes for the dog in winter, especially in cold weather. The terrier does not have a coat or undercoat to keep him warm, and therefore he is very sensitive to low temperatures. By the way, in the summer it is also worth keeping an eye on the pet: the active sun and a long stay of the dog under its direct rays can cause burns or heat stroke. A dog’s skin can tan, which is why a moisturizer should always be in your veterinarian’s first aid kit.

It is believed that the American Hairless Terrier is prone to allergies, so when choosing food, carefully monitor the reaction of the dog’s body and contact your veterinarian if you find the first signs of an allergy.
