What smells dogs can’t stand

Many people know the saying “smell like a dog”, and it appeared for a reason: the sense of smell of dogs is hundreds of times stronger than that of humans. The nose of a pet can distinguish a huge number of scents, but at the same time makes some smells unpleasant or too harsh for the animal. What smells do dogs dislike, and which ones can they even suffer from?

Pungent odors can not only cause inconvenience to the dog, but also dull his sense of smell or even harm his health. This is important to know, especially if unpleasant scents are planned to be used to raise a pet.

Smells that dogs don’t like

There are several signs that your dog will definitely not like the smell:

1. Strong smell. An aroma that hits even a person’s nose will be much sharper and more unpleasant for a dog.

2. Odors that irritate mucous membranes. It can be, for example, gases, as in pepper spray.

3. Tobacco and the smell of alcohol. Such aromas will also be unpleasant for the animal. This applies even to odors emanating from a person who is intoxicated. That’s why dogs don’t like drunk people.

4. Chemical fragrances. The smells of household chemicals, say bleach, will seem too harsh to the dog.

Some natural scents can also be unpleasant for a pet:

● Peppers, garlic or onions ● Citrus fruits ● Wormwood ● Lavender ● Coffee.

Many dog owners use unpleasant but not harmful scents to wean their pets off. For example, you can place coffee grounds next to flower beds to keep your dog from crushing the flowers, or spray roses with lemon water to keep your pet away.

Dangerous odors for dogs

In addition to smells that will be simply unpleasant for the dog, there are those that are dangerous to her health. First of all, these include the smells of chemicals and various detergents. The fragrances of some household products can cause an allergic reaction and irritation of the nose and eyes of the animal. Such odors are especially dangerous for puppies.

The dog should be kept away from odors:

● bleach, ● hair or nail polish, ● acetone, ● furniture polish, ● ammonia, ● alcohol, ● paint thinner, ● glass cleaner, ● deodorant, ● sprays and aerosols.

These odors can carry hazardous chemical agents such as acids or alkalis. They cause allergic reactions and other diseases in dogs. The contact of such agents with mucous membranes leads to burns, poisoning and problems with the gastrointestinal tract. It is important to keep all potentially hazardous substances away so that the pet cannot get to them due to its natural curiosity.
