What should be a cage for a ferret?

If you’re considering getting a ferret, buying a ferret cage should be one of your first steps. Many here will shrug their shoulders: “Why does a ferret need a cage? After all, this is not a chinchilla and not a hamster. However, cages are becoming more and more popular every day, not only for ferrets, but also for dogs and cats. What is the secret of such popularity?

Contrary to stereotypes, a cage is by no means a measure of punishment, but a cozy pet house in which he is completely safe. Remember at least the children’s playpen. The ferret cage performs the same function, but far from being the only one.

Protecting the animal from the dangers that lie in wait in the apartment (cables, appliances, garbage that the animal can accidentally swallow, etc.), the cage also satisfies its natural instinct. In their natural habitat, these animals rest and hide from danger in holes, and in your apartment there should be a worthy alternative to such a hole – a cage. You can install a hanging house or a comfortable bed in it, and then your pet will be truly happy. In such a cage house, the ferret is comfortable, moreover, it is sufficiently isolated from others so that uninvited guests do not disturb his sleep. But that’s not all.

The cage is an effective element of raising a pet. With its help, you can train your ferret to the toilet, correct his behavior and protect your home interior and personal belongings from damage. Remember, ferrets are incredibly active pets, they never mind crawling up and down the apartment and trying everything that comes their way. It is the cage that will help protect both the environment of the apartment and the ferret itself from possible unpleasant incidents (for example, an accidentally swallowed thing can lead to obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract or poisoning). And, of course, this attribute is especially indispensable when you are away on business and cannot look after your pet, as well as at night.

But for the cage to really become a cozy home for the ferret, you need to choose the right model. What should be a cage for a ferret?

  • What should be a cage for a ferret? First of all, the house should be spacious. Do not choose a cage with dimensions less than 91X63X100 cm. More is better! The ideal option is multi-storey cages with several levels, shelves and stairs, so that the mobile animal always has the opportunity to run and stretch. If you have several ferrets, then the cage, respectively, should be larger.

  • The bars of the cage should be made of high-quality metal, protected from rust, and the pallet should be made of strong wear-resistant plastic. Such models will last as long as possible and with high quality.

  • Keep in mind that wooden cages are not suitable for ferrets: they are difficult to clean, they are not durable, and parasites are easily introduced into the tree. Aquariums are categorically not suitable for ferrets, even if they are very large, because. they have inadequate ventilation.

  • The cage must have reliable locks that prevent escape attempts and exclude spontaneous opening.

For ease of use, choose cells with the following characteristics:

– the presence of a special stand with wheels (preferably with locking ones, as in the Midwest Ferret Nation cage) for easy transportation,

– the ability to quickly collect and disassemble,

– an easily removable tray for easy cleaning (due to special clamps),

– doors that open along the entire height (which also greatly facilitates cleaning),

– lockable ramps creating safe sections for cleaning.

Perhaps these are the main points that you should pay attention to when choosing.

Having chosen the optimal model, you will not get overjoyed looking at a happy pet, and appreciate the advantages of the cage from the very first days of its operation.
