What litter to choose for ferrets?

Ferrets are pets with character. Some of their habits are impossible to fight. Fortunately, this is not about the desire to do your business in the wrong places. If a ferret ignores the litter box, there is a good reason for it. For example, incorrectly selected filler. Read more about this in our article.

As a filler for a ferret, different owners choose different materials. Some use sawdust, others use hay, and still others prefer to cut paper. What is the best litter for a ferret?

The main selection criteria are natural composition, good absorbent properties and high quality. The filler should quickly absorb liquid, retain unpleasant odors and stay dry for as long as possible.

The paper is absolutely not suitable for this role. It does not absorb moisture well, does not fight bad odors and can cause an allergic reaction in a ferret. Hay at first glance seems like a great choice. It’s natural, fragrant, and ferrets just love to dig into it. However, hay is a very poor absorbent.

If the filler does not cope with its function, it becomes wet in the tray and it smells unpleasant. In matters of hygiene, ferrets are even more demanding than cats. They will not use a dirty toilet, but will find a cleaner place. Perhaps even several of these places!

But sawdust perfectly cope with their role. They perfectly absorb moisture, keep an unpleasant smell and remain dry for a long time. The ferret is pleased, and the owners have less trouble with cleaning. Their only drawback is the likelihood of an allergic reaction. Contacting with a large amount of sawdust, the pet constantly inhales microscopic particles, which does not benefit the respiratory system. Therefore, experts recommend using another, safe alternative: corn filler for rodents (for example, Fiory). Just like sawdust, it perfectly absorbs secretions, but at the same time it does not crumble, does not stick to the paws, does not get stuck in wool and does not get into the lungs.

Whatever filler you choose – corn, hay or sawdust – always pay attention to quality. It is better to purchase a special product designed for ferrets and rodents in a strong one-piece package. In case of poor-quality storage, packaging and transportation, in conditions of sale by weight, parasites or contaminants dangerous to the pet may be present in the fillers. Be careful and, if possible, contact trusted pet stores. So you can be sure that you have purchased a really good product for your pet.
