What is the difference between a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Cardigan?

Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigans are English shepherd dogs bred in Wales and became widespread in the XNUMXth century. What are the characteristics of each of these breeds?

Two varieties are included in the standards – the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. According to legend, corgi puppies were given to people by fairies. Welsh Corgi, despite their miniature parameters, belong to the group of shepherd dogs. Corgis are considered the most recognizable and commercially successful breed.

Welsh Corgi Pembroke

The Pembroke is a compact Corgi with a friendly personality. It was the Pembroke puppy that King George VI gave to his daughters Lilibet and Anna. Lilibet, who later became Queen Elizabeth II, still prefers this breed.

  • Appearance. The Pembroke is a miniature but proportionally built dog with short legs, fluffy fur and large ears. The muzzle is somewhat reminiscent of a fox. Previously, according to the breed standard, long tails were docked, now they are kept. But most Pembrokes are born with or without a very short tail. Common colors include red, black and tan, sable and fawn. Pembrokes have brown eyes.
  • Character. Very active dog, suitable for families with children. Friendly to people and other pets. He loves physical contact and stroking, can not stand loneliness.
  • Content. It is preferable to start training Pembrokes at a very young age. They do not always follow the owner’s commands and are distracted by other dogs or people. Pembrokes need grooming and brushing, especially during the shedding season. It is necessary to carefully monitor the nutrition of the dog and follow the recommendations of the veterinarian.

Welsh corgi cardigan

The Cardigan Corgi is a larger relative of the Pembroke. They are preferred to be kept as pets by English aristocrats. They are almost never used as hunting assistants and shepherd dogs.

  • Appearance. The cardigan is slightly larger and more massive than the pembroke. It has powerful front legs, slightly longer than its relative, a large head and large ears. Cardigans have a fluffy long tail, similar to a fox – other tails are contrary to the breed standard. Among the colors, red, marble, black with white spots, brindle and sable prevail. The eyes are most often brown, but there are also blue ones.
  • Character. A more calm and balanced dog, unlike the Pembroke. Be wary of strangers and animals. Suitable for families without children and single people. Cardigans are very independent, they carefully follow commands during training, they can be alone and do not stick to the owner with games.
  • Content. Cardigans need to be brushed regularly and matted hair removed. Nail clipping and regular bathing are also required as the coat gets dirty. A balanced diet is suitable for nutrition

No matter what kind of Welsh Corgi the potential owners choose, he will certainly become the best friend and companion in active games for the whole family.
