How to transport a dog in an electric train or a long-distance train in accordance with the rules of the Russian Federation

To travel around Russia, many pet owners choose the railway. Transportation of dogs on the train usually does not cause difficulties: the animal is calm, the owner is nearby, and sometimes you can even take a walk, albeit not for long. Knowing the general rules for transporting dogs on a train or train, it will be easier to get ready for the road.

Travel documents

If the dog goes to rest, to visit, to the dacha with the owner and returns with him, then you can not take a veterinary passport or any certificates on the train. And if the dog goes to a new home or to an exhibition, then you should familiarize yourself with the list of necessary documents on the website of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Control. Each case will require its own references. However, it is always better to take a pet with you for every fire passport.

Long distance trains

By purchasing a ticket for himself, the owner can buy a travel document for a pet. Depending on the size, you can carry one large or two small dogs along it. To understand what size a dog is by train travel standards, you will need a ruler. With its help, you need to measure the length, height and width of the carrier, and then add these three numbers. If the amount is less than 180 cm and the pet fits easily in the carrier, then it belongs to the category of small ones. According to the rules, the dog must go in the place of luggage, but if the owner is watching it, then the conductors are unlikely to separate the pet from his person.

But a large dog will have to be muzzled and on a leash all the way. This is strictly monitored. Large pets may not be transported on all trains and not in all carriages. You can clarify this on the carrier’s website: in the description of the wagons, in this case, they write: “Transportation of large dogs is prohibited.” There you can also find the tariff for transporting a dog on a Russian Railways train or with any other carrier.

Short distance trip

In electric trains, documents for a dog are not required, and the rules, as carry dog in the train, easier. Small dogs can be carried in the carriage: on hands, without carrying, but in a collar and with a leash. You can’t put your dog on the train seat. Large pets ride in the vestibule. There they must be muzzled, collared, on a leash, and no more than two animals per car.

On the train for the dog you need to buy a ticket. For example, in the electric trains of the TsPPK (Moscow, Moscow, Tula, Bryansk, Vladimir, Kaluga and other regions), the cost of transporting any dog is 25% of the fare of the accompanying person. Guide dogs travel free of charge.

How to choose a train and compartment

Before buying a ticket at the box office, you must definitely tell the cashier that a dog will go on a trip – small or large. He will select the appropriate type of train and class of service, calculate the cost of transporting an animal.

If you plan to buy a ticket through a terminal or a mobile application, you need to pay attention to the icon with the image of a dog’s paw: this is how the “dog car” on the train is designated. Usually, the foot is drawn next to the car number in a row of icons with available services. If the pattern of the paw is crossed out obliquely or it is not there, then they will not be planted with the animal. These are, for example, many seated cars, reserved seats and a number of compartments.

When everything is decided with the documents, the direction and the carriage, you can safely go on a trip with a dog by train. Bon Voyage!
