Two rabbits in one cage: pros and cons
Do you already have a decorative rabbit or are you just about to get one? Congratulations, these are adorable pets. So charming that you want to take home a whole company, well, or at least two! But can rabbits live together? How do they feel better: with relatives or alone? About this in our article.
First of all, rabbits are social animals. In nature, they live in groups of about 10 individuals, and in colonies there are more than 100 of them. Rabbits have their own language of communication, and it is very rich. With its help, the animals exchange a huge number of signals, which often save their lives. The sounds made, the position of the body and especially the ears, the turn of the head – everything has its own important meaning. But communication is not only about survival. Rabbits love to take care of each other and play together. Anyone who has ever seen how carefully rabbits wash each other is convinced that it is better to have two, not one. Even if the animal makes good friends with the owners, with a cat or a guinea pig, he will still lack “conversations” with relatives. Communicating with other species for him is like trying to make out the cries of an exotic animal. It seems interesting, and in some places it even becomes clear, but it is not suitable as the main communication.
Many experts attribute the development of diseases and a short lifespan to being kept alone. In their opinion, a rabbit that does not communicate with relatives grows up with behavioral defects and psychological problems. And psychological problems, as you know, are reflected in physical health.
But there is another side. Sometimes two rabbits in the same cage are not friends, but enemies. They avoid each other, share something all the time, fight not for life, but for death. In a word, there can be no talk of friendship, and such neighbors must be separated. It happens that one rabbit in a litter is weaker and more timid than all the others. Even when he grows up, stronger relatives will oppress him. And sometimes the situation is the opposite: the animal grows too independent, wayward and often acts as an aggressor.
However, experts are convinced that any rabbit needs a relative and a suitable pair can always be found. The main thing is the right approach. We’ll talk more about this in the article “”.
