Sterilization: possible complications

Even if the operation was successful, you should not relax. You need to carefully monitor the condition of the pet in order to provide timely assistance if complications arise.

Possible Complications After Spaying in Dogs

Complications after sterilization in bitches

After sterilization, complications are more common in bitches 7 years of age and older.

  1. hormone dependent obesity. This is due to changes in metabolism. Prevention: use food for sterilized dogs, ensuring sufficient physical activity.
  2. Alopecia (hormone-dependent alopecia). Associated with a lack of estrogen production. There is no prevention. Treatment: the appointment of drugs containing estrogen.
  3. Hormone dependent urinary incontinence. Associated with a lack of estrogen. This condition is sometimes confused with senile urinary incontinence, but they are different things.

There is no prevention.

Treatment: the appointment of drugs containing estrogen.

Complications after sterilization in males

  1. Early – observed either immediately after castration, or after a few hours (before the development of edema): bleeding, prolapse of the omentum, bladder, intestines, etc.
  2. Late: hormone-dependent obesity (associated with changes in metabolism). Prevention: use of food for castrated dogs, sufficient physical activity.
