Character

The exact origin of the Spanish Water Dog is unknown. Some researchers believe that its ancestors are North African dogs, others are convinced that Turkish traders brought similar dogs to Spain. One way or another, the Spanish Water Dog was known in Andalusia as early as the first millennium. For a long time she helped shepherds and hunters. However, when sheepdogs and hunting dogs were bred, her popularity declined. Then sailors and fishermen began to get pets of this breed, who noticed the animal’s love for water.

This dog is considered the ancestor of many other breeds, including spaniels, retrievers and other water dogs.

The Spanish Water Dog combines several characteristics from different breed groups at once. From shepherd dogs, she got diligence and security qualities. Animals are distrustful of strangers, but do not show aggression.

Behaviour

Like many hunting dogs, the Spanish Water Dog is ready to follow the owner everywhere and be always there. At the same time, she treats other family members with love and affection, especially children. Good-natured and cheerful pets can spend hours in the company of kids. The main thing is that the child treats the pet with respect.

In general, the Spanish Water Dog is a versatile breed. At home in Spain, these dogs do an excellent job of their duties in the fire service and the police – they participate in rescue operations. These are indispensable helpers that work in the water and can dive to a depth of more than 4 meters.

Spanish water dogs learn quite quickly – they are attentive and executive students. It is important to establish contact with the pet, because for the sake of the owner and his praise, he will do anything.

Spanish Water Dogs get along well with other animals in the house. They are peaceful, but at the same time they can stand up for themselves.

Spanish Water Dog Care

The Spanish Water Dog does not require careful care from the owner. It is enough to brush your pet once a week .

Interestingly, puppies have curly coats, while adult dogs have more straight coats. Since the Spanish Water Dog loves water, otitis media often occurs in pets of this breed. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the health of the dog’s ears, regularly check their condition and, if signs of an inflammatory process appear, do not postpone a visit to the veterinarian.

Conditions of detention

Active and mobile Spanish dogs need daily long walks. And since the breed is working, it also needs training and an appropriate load. In the conditions of the city with a dog, you can do agility . Smart and fast animals show very good results in competitions.
