Pogostemon octopus

Pogostemon octopus (obsolete Pogostemon stellatus “Octopus”) – this name is widespread among Russian-speaking aquarists and is repeated in many sources. However, it is erroneous. In 2013, it was established that Pogostemon quadrifolius, known in Europe, America and Asia as Pogostemon “Octopus” in national languages, is supplied under this name.

In nature, it is widely distributed throughout South and Southeast Asia from India to Thailand. It occurs everywhere in many stagnant and flowing water bodies (river banks, lakes, swamps, etc.).

Under water, the plant forms a long curving stem with the same elongated narrow leaves. In favorable conditions, it grows quickly and can soon fill a small aquarium. Regular pruning required. Each separated cutting, when planted in the ground, soon gives roots and becomes an independent new plant.

Considered easy to maintain. For healthy growth, it is enough to provide a high or medium level of lighting and a nutrient substrate: sand, fine gravel, aquarium soil. Not picky about the hydrochemical composition of water.
