Plecostomuses
Aquarium Fish Species

Plecostomuses

Mail or Loricari catfish belong to the Loricariidae family, which has more than 600 species, and many do not yet have an exact scientific classification. One of the first representatives of this family appeared in aquariums Plecostomus (Hypostomus plecostomus). Later, among aquarists, its name became collective for all Chain Catfish. The abbreviated name Pleco is also widely used as a synonym.

Come from South America. They are found everywhere from the Andes Mountains to the east coast of Brazil, inhabiting both fast, sometimes stormy rivers, and quiet backwaters, swamps, lakes, and even brackish waters. They feed mainly on plant foods – algae growing on the surface of stones, snags. Such a diet determined the structural features of the mouth, which turned into a kind of sucker. Another characteristic feature is the integument of the body, consisting of bone plates, reminiscent of the chain mail of knights. An additional means of protection are sharp spines and spikes – the modified first rays of the fins.
