Peristolifolia brazilian
Urut aquatic or Brazilian Peristolist, scientific name Myriophyllum aquaticum “Normalform”. Widely known to the aquarist by the obsolete but still used Latin name Myriophyllum brasiliense. This plant species is native to the tropics of South America. However, at present it is found in the wild nature of North America and Europe, largely through the fault of gardeners.
The prefix “Normalform” means that this is a male plant, that is, it forms flowers that have only stamens. Accordingly, the female plant has only carpels and is called Urut fir-tree – it is presented for sale as a separate species due to external differences.
Able to grow both under water and on land in moist soil, as well as simply floating on the surface. True, in the latter case, growth will be slowed down. In aquariums, the plant has a long stem up to 60 cm, attached to the soil with fragile roots. The leaves are whorled and attached to the base of the stem, outwardly resembling feathers. Leaf color with predominant yellow hues. In the air, the stem thickens significantly, and the “needles” of the leaves become short, acquiring a green color. In favorable conditions it forms dense clumps.
Relatively easy to maintain. It perfectly adapts to low (but positive) water and air temperatures, which is why in Europe it is often used in garden ponds during the warm season. Needs nutrient soil and soft slightly acidic water. At the same time, in a mature aquarium, additional introduction of fertilizers and dressings is not required. Organic matter formed as a result of the life of fish will be quite enough.
