Origin story

The name “Old German Shepherd Dogs” is a generalization for a whole group of dogs of various breeds used in Germany for herding and guarding herds of both sheep and cattle. In this breed group, dogs are selected not for their exterior, as is now customary in breeding dog breeding, but exclusively for working qualities. Many centuries ago, shepherd dogs helped the inhabitants of Germany, but later interest in ancient breeds began to fade, and their very existence was threatened, which was greatly facilitated by the breeding of the German Shepherd .. However, in 1989, a group of enthusiasts created the Society for the Breeding of Old German Cattle Breeds (AAN) to preserve these dogs. Stud books were created. At the same time, only the working qualities of producers, their behavior, and the presence of an innate shepherd instinct are checked at tribal reviews.

Description

Modern old German shepherd dogs are divided into several types: black, fox, yellow-cheeked and sheep poodle. All these dogs are long-haired, however, the length and structure of the coat varies depending on the type. The color of these dogs is also different. So, foxes are usually all shades of red, the color is bright and saturated, their ears are upright.

Yellow cheeks, as the name suggests, have a bright red or yellow tan on the cheeks, while the main coat color is black.

The coat of sheep poodles is long, flowing, closes the eyes. The ears of these dogs are hanging or semi-hanging. Black dogs are characterized by a rich black color and erect ears. They are similar in appearance to foxes.

Character

All types of Old German Cattle Dogs have excellent trainability. These animals are very obedient and friendly, they are reliable and loyal friends and helpers. In addition to grazing with representatives of the breed group, you can engage in various types of training , they can easily become companion dogs. Thanks to the selection for working qualities, they have a strong herding instinct and can begin to “graze” family members, for example, preventing children from going far from their parents.

Old German Shepherd Dog Care

Since all these dogs are long-haired, they require periodic grooming, but due to the structure of the coat, this care is not burdensome. It is enough to comb the animal once or twice a week . Claws and ears are treated as needed.

How to keep

Old German shepherd dogs are unpretentious in everyday life and very hardy. They live well in warm enclosures, it is much more difficult for them to adapt to life in an apartment.

Price

Since old German shepherd dogs are practically not found outside of Germany, you will have to go to the birthplace of the breed for a puppy, and therefore you should add the cost of delivery to its cost. Plus, you will have to prove to the breeders that you are the right one to sell the puppy, as there is a very strict policy in place to preserve the working qualities of the breed.
