Medicated dog food

The veterinarian will diagnose the animal, select the appropriate treatment and special food. Usually, medicated food is prescribed for a certain period during which the health of the animal must be restored. But there are also cases of its lifelong use: old age, severe chronic diseases – for example, diabetes.

Almost all major pet food manufacturers have their own line of therapeutic dog food. The product range is different: someone specializes in some diseases, someone in others.

Types of medicated feed

For gastrointestinal problems

Gastritis, colitis, enteritis, poisoning, various inflammatory processes in the stomach and intestines – unfortunately, dogs also suffer from all this. Such a problem may be congenital, or developed after an illness, or from improper or inappropriate feeding, or due to allergies.

Appropriate nutrition should be selected – lightweight, so that the sick or weakened organs of the animal are provided with a sparing mode of operation. As a rule, a series of such feeds in the name has the prefix “gastro”.

For problems with the pancreas

If this organ in a dog does not begin to work at full strength, then troubles can begin with the gastrointestinal tract, and with the skin, and with wool, and with the liver and kidneys. Therefore, with pancreatitis, medicated feeds are also prescribed, lightweight and with a reduced fat content.

For allergy sufferers

Allergies and autoimmune diseases can be both a feature of the breed and color: it is well known that white animals are the most allergic, as well as animals with individual intolerance. Manufacturers produce lines of hypoallergenic food, but owners must choose the right food for their pet. One dog will suit one that does not contain chicken, another – fish: this is determined only experimentally, empirically. As a rule, this therapeutic food contains a minimum of protein. There is even a series that excludes meat.

Medicated dog food

For kidney and bladder problems

These are products marked Renal and Urinary. The latter has several varieties of food that should be given to the animal, depending on the severity of its condition. Food for dogs with diseased kidneys should exclude phosphorus compounds, as they contribute to the creation of struvite formations.

When exhausted

Specialized high-calorie feeds will help. For completely weakened animals, it is better to start recovery with soft food – various types of canned food.

Medicated dog food

With obesity

A lightweight diet for sedentary and obese dogs will help. This food contains an increased concentration of fiber, which gives a feeling of fullness with low calories.
