Hygrophila polysperma

Hygrophila polysperma, scientific name Hygrophila polysperma. This unpretentious plant, popular in the aquarium trade, originates from the swamps of India and Bhutan. There are several artificially bred varieties that differ in leaf color.

It has a long stem up to 50 cm with elongated green leaves of a lanceolate shape, located two on each tier. It grows quickly, so pruning and thinning will be required every 2-3 weeks, since Hygrophila multi-seeded produces many shoots. The cut fragment can be planted in the ground, it will soon take root and become an independent plant.

It belongs to the hardy species along with Anubias. Able to grow in various conditions, not demanding on the mineral composition of the soil, the degree of illumination, does not need fertilizers and additional introduction of carbon dioxide. It can be an excellent choice for the beginner aquarist. The only limitation is that due to its size it is not suitable for small aquariums.
