How to name a parrot

Each owner of birds faced the choice of a name for a parrot. One cannot but agree that this is a very individual and personal process at the beginning of the period of building a relationship with a bird. You can come up with a name in advance, but when you see a parrot, you understand that it is not his, he is not Kesha, but Eldarchik.

Do not rush with the name for the bird, study the pet and then you will definitely get to the point: capturing both the character of the parrot and your preferences.

A good name for a parrot is one that merges with the personality of the bird itself and suits the owner. We will never call a pet a hateful nickname. Even if we get a parrot from another owner, and we don’t like the name, we either change it to a consonant one, or select a diminutive version. In the end, we pronounce a pleasant name for us and a happy one for the feathered inhabitant.

Do not forget that the bird will live with this name all his life, and this is at least 15 years. Moreover, if this is a talker bird, then you will hear this name more often than you want, and it certainly should not annoy you.

Names for talkers

Nicknames for parrots are chosen based on the characteristics of each bird.

Talkative parrots misrepresent their name in a very funny way, and it is the first word your pet will say. If you are counting on learning the conversation of a bird, then it is better that its name contains whistling and hissing sounds “s”, “h”, “sh”: Czech, Stasik, Gosha, Tishka.

The letter “r” is also useful: Romka, Gavrosh, Jerik, Tarasik, Patrick. Short and clear names are easier to remember, but for a parrot that has a talent for imitating human speech, longer names will not be an obstacle either.

In practice, there was a case when the budgerigar Kiryusha called himself not only Kiryushka, but also Kiryushenichka. Apparently it was a derivative version of the phrase “Kiryusha birdie.”

Parrots like to stretch vowel sounds, they are especially successful in drawing out “o”, “i”, “yu”, “e”, “a”.

Sounds: “l”, “m”, “c”, “o” are difficult for some of the varieties of birds (for example, wavy).

In some species of parrots, sexual dimorphism is not expressed. When you are not sure who is in front of you: a boy or a girl, it is best to call the bird a neutral name that does not determine gender. Then Kirill will not become Ryusha, and Manechka will not become Sanechka.

Particularly inventive owners give a double name to their birds. This should not be done for two reasons: the bird may not perceive the middle name or simply not say it, the next reason is that the owners themselves subsequently shorten both words in the process of communicating with the bird.

The name must be pronounced affectionately, lingeringly and distinctly. The parrot will copy your intonation when pronouncing the word, and your clear pronunciation is important. Birds easily “swallow” letters, and even when you correct yourself and start saying the pet’s name correctly, the parrot will accept both options and after a time you will hear Larik, instead of Lavrrik or Kalupchik, and not Darling.

To choose a better name for a parrot, most often it’s enough to observe its behavior for a while, carefully consider the colors of the plumage and note for yourself the characteristic habits of the bird (neatness, eccentricity, prudence, good nature, vociferousness or a funny reaction to something). After observations, the nickname of a parrot may arise by itself: Shustry, Vzhik, Tiny, Snezhka, Lemon.

If this did not happen, people turn to their idols and after that appear in the cells: Gerards, Sheldons, Tysons, Monicas or Kurts.

The fact that the child named the parrot can be easily understood when you hear the name of a member of the feathered family: Batman, Hulk, Rarity, Nipper, Olaf or Krosh.

If there are no intentions to teach the bird to talk, then choose the nickname for the parrot based only on your preferences.

In order to make it easier for you to navigate and choose the most suitable name for your pet, below are lists of names for parrots for boys and girls in alphabetical order.
