Buying a parrot: which one to choose?

You have finally decided that you want to get a parrot as a pet. This should be a deliberate decision, because any animal is not a toy. This is a big responsibility, because wrong actions or simply inaction can lead to serious irreparable consequences.  I would like people to realize that some birds live quite a long time and need daily care. Before buying, you should read the literature about the nature or specifics of some species, because you will have many years together. For example, parrots the most common among all those kept at home. They are lively, mobile, interesting, quite unpretentious in care, they also live for a long time. However, when keeping a large flock, they can be quite noisy, there will be a lot of garbage from them, and the host may have an allergy.

If you choose one of the medium parrots as a pet, then there are a lot of options. cockatiels more phlegmatic, poorly trained in imitating speech, but usually not as noisy. American species (pirruri, monks, aratingi etc.), as well as necklace parrots are very noisy. They can easily spoil furniture, wallpaper, and more.

However, they are very interesting in their behavior, quick-witted and playful.

From my experience I will tell you a case – pyrrura played with a plastic ball, lying on his back. And the monk, flying in the room, in flight took a plastic swing in his beak, grabbed the perch on them with his paws, and so in the swing flew around the room.

Watching such funny things is very educational. When keeping such birds, you need to stock up on a decent amount of toys, it is better to make a stand for spending time outside the cage.

From what is available on the market, you should also remember cute African friends. inseparable Despite their small size, the birds are quite noisy, sometimes they are aggressive both to each other and to the owner. However, they are very bright, as unpretentious as budgerigars. They breed quite well in captivity and live long. They also have a fairly wide field for breeders.

Rosella, for example, more gentle creatures. They also have a weak ability to reproduce speech, however they have bright plumage and they are quite quiet.

kakariki quite interesting in their behavior, they are not like other parrots. Many are on the ground, digging up the litter in search of tasty treats (take care of the flowerpots). They eat from their paws, are tameable and quiet. However, more berries, fruits, etc. should be included in their diet. Their litter is more liquid, which must be taken into account when cleaning.

I advise buying large parrots to already well-trained people. Since they will take you a lot of time. They have a high intelligence, requiring the participation of the owner. You can’t just put them in a cage and watch. They are noisy, require a lot of attention and a well-balanced diet.

Large parrots live longer than medium ones. With a lack of care, birds can start to get sick or pluck themselves. Jaco and cockatoo very badly tolerate separation from the owner. Macaws do not have a good ability to reproduce speech, but they love to play and, like cockatoos, they can be taught various tricks. Jaco beautiful and capable “talkers” will be excellent companions.

All this must be taken into account when buying a feathered friend in order for your life together to be comfortable and enjoyable.
