Food for chow chow dogs

“Dog of the Tang Dynasty”, “dog – shaggy lion” – as soon as the name of this breed, unusual for our ears, is not translated! Chow chows really resemble important lions – and they have an appetite to match.

How to feed chow chow?

When feeding a dog, you should follow some rules. To start:

  • Study expert advice, compositions of industrial feeds.
  • Prepare place to eat. The dog should eat from a bowl located at a comfortable height for her. As the pet grows, the bowl must be raised. These simple actions will keep the Chow Chow in the correct posture.
  • Do not forget water: the pet should have access to a bowl of clean water around the clock with any type of food.

The weight of puppies at two months should be 5-7 kg, at four – 13-17 kg. The weight of an adult bitch varies from 20 to 27 kg, for a male – from 25 to 32 kg. This breed is prone to obesity, so feed your pet on a schedule, not on demand. It is easier to control the weight of the Chow Chow if you use premium dry food: it contains all the necessary substances, selected taking into account the characteristics of the breed.

A simple test will help determine the optimal portion for your dog: offer him industrial food and wait 20 minutes. All that’s left is redundant. If the dog coped very quickly, the portion needs to be slightly increased.

sensitive points

Chow Chows are healthy dogs with a strong immune system. Following a routine of vaccinations and insect treatments is usually enough to keep a pet healthy. However, this breed also has “sensitive points” that every owner should be aware of.

  1. specific metabolism. Genetically, the breed has a reduced need for animal proteins. Excess meat in the diet can lead to severe allergic reactions. Based on this, for an adult, the volume of proteins in dry food should not exceed 23%.
  2. Susceptibility to diabetes. Control the carbohydrate content in your pet’s diet and do not indulge him with sweet and starchy foods.
  3. Tendency to joint diseases. Make sure that the diet is rich in calcium, do not neglect mineral supplements.

Careful attention to the pet will help him to maintain health until old age.
