The Flat-Coated Retriever, a rather young breed of hunting dog, was bred in the 18th century in Great Britain. For a long time, this particular variety of retrievers was the most popular in the country. Later they appeared golden retriever and Labrador who took the lead.

The ancestors of the Flat-Coated Retriever are the now-extinct St. John’s dog and various types of setters. Interestingly, the straight coat of representatives of this breed has always been considered its hallmark.

The Flat-Coated Retriever can surprise anyone. It’s like two completely different dogs coexist in it. On the one hand, they are hardworking, active and hardy hunters who have excellent instincts and are not afraid of water. At home in England, they are respectfully called “huntsman’s dog”.

On the other hand, breeders note that the Flat-Coated Retriever never grows out of puppyhood. A funny, silly and even somewhat infantile dog, in old age he will still arrange little pranks with the same pleasure. You should be prepared for this, since not all owners can tolerate such a pet’s character.

Behaviour

Responsive and quick-witted, the Flat-Coated Retriever easily learns new information and understands what the owner wants.Train representatives of this breed is quite simple. However, certain skills will still be needed, so the owner must have at least minimal experience in dog training.

The Flat-Coated Retriever needs human company, he quickly gets used to the family and is ready to follow the owner everywhere. Loneliness negatively affects the character of the dog, it becomes nervous and uncontrollable.

With children, the Flat Retriever quickly finds a common language. But if you plan to purchase a puppy for a child, then it is still better to choose his relative – a golden retriever or a labrador.

The Flat-Coated Retriever is an outgoing and outgoing dog. If he was on time socialized, there will be no problems. The main thing is that the neighbor should not be aggressive and cocky.

Flat Coated Retriever Care

The Flat Retriever has a medium length coat. She requires weekly combing with a medium hard brush. After each walk, it is advisable to inspect the dog, clean it of dirt.

It is also important to periodically clean ears and the eyes of a pet.

Conditions of detention

The Flat Retriever is extremely active, he literally cannot sit still, especially at a young age. This dog needs at least 2-3 walks a day, for a total duration of at least two hours. And it should be not just a calm promenade, but running, games and all kinds of physical exercises.
