The Red Fire Shrimp or Fire Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi “Red”) belongs to the Atyidae family. Comes from Southeast Asia, bred in a nursery in Taiwan. It has a modest size and can be kept in a small aquarium from 10 liters, but rapid reproduction can soon make the tank cramped.

There is another color variety – Yellow Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi “Yellow”). The joint maintenance of both forms is not recommended in order to avoid crossing and the appearance of hybrid offspring.

Maintenance and care

Sharing with aquarium fish is allowed, large aggressive species that can harm Fire Shrimp should be excluded. In the design of the aquarium, be sure to provide places for shelters (hollow tubes, pots, vessels). To create natural conditions, dry leaves, pieces of oak or beech, walnuts are added, they enrich the water with tannins. Read more in the article “Which tree leaves can be used in an aquarium.”

Shrimp is safe for plants with enough food. It accepts all types of food supplied to the fish, and will pick up uneaten leftovers. Herbal supplements are required, such as pieces of cucumber, carrots, lettuce, spinach and other vegetables or fruits. Pieces should be renewed regularly to prevent water spoilage. They reproduce quite quickly, adults produce offspring every 4-6 weeks.
