Can cats fish?

Risk Factors

So, what can threaten a pet eating fish? If it is raw, then the probability of infection of the animal with parasites is high. And they, in turn, can cause the development of many serious diseases – for example, opisthorchiasis. But even after cooking the fish, the danger does not disappear: sharp bones are able to injure the pet’s gastrointestinal tract, which is fraught with the development of inflammatory processes.

You also need to take into account the following circumstance: the fish contains calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in a clearly excessive amount – without exaggeration, harmful to the cat. This is because these minerals are an excellent “building material” for stones in the urinary system.

This means that the more fish a pet consumes, the higher the risk of developing urolithiasis, to which cats generally have a predisposition.

Right choice of

A wonderful alternative to fish are industrial rations containing fish. They maintain a balance of all the nutrients a cat needs – in particular, the mentioned calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.

As a rule, the clarification “With fish” appears in the names of these feeds, since diets are made not on the basis of this product, but with a certain amount of it. All because of the above reason – the cat does not need to receive fish in its pure form, so as not to cause unpleasant consequences.

However, the amount of fish in the feed is quite enough for the pet – he will feel its taste and smell and eat the food with appetite, without exposing himself to the risks that we talked about.

Examples of such diets include Whiskas, which have popular fishy flavors such as salmon and trout. You can also recall the food from the brands Purina Pro Plan, Felix, Kitekat, Meglium, Hill’s Science Plan. That is, the range is really diverse.
