Blixa New Guinea

Blix “New Guinea”, scientific name Blyxa sp. Novoguineensis. The name is in quotation marks because there is a mistake in the aquarium trade, in reality it is a variety of Blixa Aubert with reddish leaves. However, the name became so widely used that they did not change it, but simply added quotes to define the pseudonym.

The plant has long narrow leaves up to 30 cm, growing in a dense bush from a single center – a rosette. Depending on the lighting, the color of the leaves varies from reddish (too much light) to brownish (too little light). There is no pronounced stem. In turn, the real Blixa New Guinea looks different, with short leaves sitting on the stem. But it is practically not found in the aquarium hobby.

For normal growth, the plant needs soft soil rich in nutrients. The iron content in the substrate, along with the light intensity, directly affect the color of the leaves. Under favorable conditions, they become burgundy red. Hydrochemical values and temperature have a fairly wide acceptable range, which allows us to characterize the plant as moderately difficult to care for.
