Character

The Bernese Hound has been known since the Middle Ages. It is believed that the first mention of the breed dates back to 1100. Since that time, these dogs have been highly valued for their hunting qualities. So much so that in the 15th century they were imported to Italy.

A little later, in the 18th century, purposeful selection of this breed began. The dogs were crossed with French hunting dogs, and as a result of careful selection in the 19th century, the Bernese, Lucerne and Swiss hounds appeared, as well as the Bruno de Jura. All of them belong to the same FCI standard – “Swiss Hound” – which was adopted in 1933.

Like all hounds, the Bernese has an extremely controversial disposition. In work, this is a tireless, aggressive fighter who is ready to go to the end. And in everyday life it is a devoted, obedient and very calm dog.

The Bernese Hound is a dog of one owner. She warmly treats all family members, but the owner and head of the family remains the only and most important thing for her.

Behaviour

Bernese hounds are balanced, they do not bark in vain and rarely show aggression. However, all this is true only in cases where the dog is well-bred and was socialized in time . By the way, it is not difficult to train a hound, although certain skills will still be needed. Therefore, a beginner is unlikely to cope without the help of a professional.

The Swiss Hound does not trust strangers, but prefers not to make contact first. But as soon as the dog gets to know the person better, the embarrassment goes away. And, as a rule, she becomes affectionate and friendly.

As for children, a lot depends on the particular dog. Most representatives of the breed, the breeders say, are quite loyal to the kids. Although there are those who are able to be jealous of their master. And in this matter, a lot also depends on the socialization and upbringing of the dog.

Bernese hounds often hunt in a group. And this means that they easily find a common language with other dogs. The behavior of a dog with cats and rodents is influenced by the temperament and character of the animal: some quickly become friends, others cannot come to terms with the fact that they have to share the territory for years.

Bernese Hound Care

The coat of the Bernese Hound is thick and short, it does not require special care. It is enough to wipe the dog with a wet hand or towel once a week to remove dead hairs. During the shedding period, the pet can be combed out with a massage brush a couple of times a week.

Conditions of detention

First of all, the Bernese Hound is a hunting dog. Until now, representatives of this breed rarely get someone as a companion. The hound needs many hours of exhausting walks. Running, games, fetching are essential components of training. Without proper loads, the character of a pet can deteriorate.
