Character

It is believed that the American Water Spaniel appeared around the 19th century. Among his ancestors were the Irish Water Spaniel, Golden Retriever , Poodle and many others. The breeders wanted to get a versatile hunting dog, calm and hardworking. And it’s safe to say that they succeeded. The American Water Spaniel is not afraid of water, it is an excellent swimmer, so it most often works with game – it brings a shot bird. In addition, this is a wonderful companion with a pleasant character and good-looking appearance.

Representatives of the breed are friendly, active and playful, especially in puppyhood. At the same time, the dog has a fairly calm and balanced character. She loves to learn and is happy to follow the commands of the owner, the main thing is to find an approach to the pet and correctly build classes.

The American Water Spaniel is an addictive nature, he quickly gets bored with monotonous work, so training should not be monotonous. It is important to engage with the dog for a short time, but often, from time to time changing the way the commands are worked out. It is especially worth noting the curiosity of spaniels – on a walk, the owner must carefully monitor the pet.

Despite the fact that the American Water Spaniel is a dog of one owner, he treats all family members equally well. You should not leave your pet alone for a long time: this is a very sociable dog, and without the company of people, he begins to get bored, sad and yearn.

The protective qualities of a spaniel entirely depend on the upbringing of the dog: some representatives of the breed are distrustful and wary of strangers, while others, on the contrary, are very happy to communicate with new people.

These spaniels get along well with other animals in the house. But at the same time, due attention must be paid to the dog, otherwise jealousy and the struggle for the owner will embroil the pets.

With children, the American Water Spaniel will play with pleasure, especially with children of school age.

The thick, curly coat of the American Water Spaniel needs to be brushed every week. During the shedding season, which occurs in spring and autumn, this should be done twice a week.

It is important to check your dog’s ears regularly. Like all animals with floppy ears, the American Water Spaniel is prone to developing otitis and other diseases.

Conditions of detention

Representatives of the breed are medium-sized dogs. Therefore, in a city apartment, they will feel quite comfortable. The main thing is to provide your pet with daily long walks, at least 2-4 hours. An active and very energetic dog can run and play outside for a long time, and the owner must be ready for this.
