Why parrot sand?

Why is it recommended to use sea sand as bedding in bird cages? What function does it perform and what nuances should be considered when choosing sand? About this and much more in our article.

Maintaining cleanliness in a bird cage is not an easy task, which is greatly facilitated by the use of bedding.

The bedding absorbs liquids, retains dirt and prevents unpleasant odors from spreading throughout the room. The use of bedding saves time that would otherwise be spent on daily hygiene in the cage. But if we can use corn filler, hay or sawdust as a filler for rodent dwellings, then with birds everything is much clearer. There is only one type of bedding suitable for our feathered friends: sea sand. And that’s why.

  • Sand guarantees not only cleanliness in the cage, but also absolute safety for the pet. Sawdust or any other filler, once in the digestive tract of a bird, will cause a serious indigestion. In addition, it is inconvenient for birds to move along such fillers. Sea sand, on the other hand, promotes good digestion and is an ideal surface for grinding claws.

  • Sea sand (for example, Fiory) contains a large amount of minerals due to the addition of oyster shells (during the production process, the shells are crushed and passed through an autoclave to remove sharp corners and chips). Thus, sand is both a filler and a useful top dressing that saturates the body with minerals, salt, calcium and promotes the health of the bones and beak of a bird.

Why parrot sand?
  • The sand allows the bird to wear down its claws and beak.

  • High-quality sea sand offered in pet stores undergoes special processing before being released for sale. It is free of contaminants, contains no harmful bacteria, and poses no threat to your pet’s health.

  • Sea sand is so useful for birds that even if you use a different bedding, it is still recommended to put a separate bowl of sand in the cage.

  • In pet stores, you can buy lemon or mint-scented sand that will fill the room with freshness. This is pleasant for both birds and their owners.

Now we know what parrots need sand for.

As a conclusion, I would like to note that sand should be purchased from trusted manufacturers who have proven themselves well in the modern pet supplies market. After all, there is absolutely no point in risking the health and well-being of your pets!
