Why do some people train dogs by force

Alas, some dog owners still live in the Middle Ages. In particular, torture is used against pets, which the masters of the Inquisition would envy. Why do some people train dogs by force?

4 Reasons Why Some People Raise Dogs With Force

  1. Methods of physical influence in relation to the dog (beating, alpha flips, jerking the leash, etc.) give the owner an emotional release. A man came home not in the mood, and then the dog messed up something. He poked her with his nose, beat her, pulled her collar – it seemed to feel better. That is, a person, having applied violence to a dog, received positive reinforcement. This means that he will use such methods more and more often – after all, he feels good at heart. One problem – most often this method teaches the dog only to be afraid of the owner and destroys all trust in the person at the root. But this is no longer so important, most importantly, the owner received moral satisfaction. And a dog can always be branded as “harmful”, “acting out of spite” and “uneducated”.
  2. The owner sincerely believes that forceful methods work, and the dog will learn to behave “correctly” in this way. Let’s say the dog tried to steal the sausage from the table, the person hit it, the dog ran away. Happened? At first glance, yes. But really, no. After all, the dog’s motivation remained unsatisfied, and he learned only to avoid the owner. So, the pet will look for other ways to satisfy the need. For example, wait until the person turns away. Violence has a big drawback – it does not teach the “right” behavior.
  3. A person does not know that it is possible to educate dogs in other ways. However, this justification is not worth considering. If 30 years ago it was possible to blame the iron curtain, because of which progressive trends from the civilized world did not reach us, now, in the age of access to any information, this is perceived as a mockery. And proof of the owner’s laziness and unwillingness to seek and digest information. When this one is cited as the cause of violence, it means that the cause is probably the next one.
  4. The owner just likes to use violence against another creature. Unfortunately, this situation is not rare. Some people are eager to assert their own power and “coolness” by subjugating another being by force. They satisfy sadistic tendencies in this way. The only way to solve the problem is to have working animal protection laws. And a ban on keeping dogs like that. However, in most countries of the post-Soviet space, this is still a utopia.

Why You Shouldn’t Train Your Dogs By Force

It is impossible to use methods based on violence and cruelty for a number of reasons.

  1. It is extremely cruel to inflict pain on a living being, which is entirely dependent on a person.
  2. Methods of education and training based on positive reinforcement work very well.
  3. Finally, a dog misbehaves for four reasons. A) She was not taught to behave properly. B) The owner himself reinforced the “bad” behavior. C) The dog behaves as it was created by nature (or was bred by man), but the owner miscalculated with the choice of the pet and he is not satisfied with such behavior. D) Finally, the basic needs of the dog are not satisfied, that is, the conditions of its life cannot be called not only ideal, but even more or less acceptable. Any of these reasons is the “merit” of a person. So, to use violence against a dog is simply dishonest. And it’s much more honest to slap yourself on the head (if you really want to use violence against someone) – for your unwillingness to change the situation and learn how to educate and train a pet humanely and effectively.
