Why cage training and loneliness are not the same

Some owners are sincerely convinced that if they buy a cage, the puppy can be left alone at home with peace of mind. After all, it seems safe for him and solves the problem of damage to property. Is it so?

Not really. Cage training and solitary training are not the same thing.

Yes, a cage sometimes helps. Of course, if you teach it correctly. For example, if you go with your dog to some events or a plumber came to your house, and you need the dog to spend some time calmly in one place and not get in the way. But it doesn’t exactly solve the problem of leaving a puppy alone.

The concept of animal welfare states that a dog cannot be in a cage for more than 4 hours per day (in total). Anything over this time is classified as animal cruelty. And, as well-known specialist Karen Overall aptly noted, if you prefer to keep your dog in a cage for such a long time, maybe you should think about getting another pet – for example, a gerbil?

Dogs weren’t made to live indoors. They are constantly moving. And if you watch your pet, even within the apartment, he moves from place to place. He takes a little nap, rises, moves to another place and lays down there. And that’s okay.

If you’re worried about your dog getting hurt when left alone, think about ways to keep it safe. For example, hide the wires and do not scatter small objects on the floor that can be swallowed.

If the dog does not stay alone, barks, howls, leaves puddles and heaps or spoils things, this is certainly not solved with the help of a cage. If you can’t teach your dog to be alone on your own, you can always seek help from a specialist who works with humane methods. To find the cause of your pet’s anxiety and develop a training program specifically for your dog.
