What kind of cage is needed for a hamster?

Pet stores offer a huge selection of cages for rodents: different sizes and configurations. What you need to know in order not to miscalculate with the purchase? What cages are suitable for hamsters?

We list the main characteristics that you need to pay attention to when choosing.

  • Hamster cage dimensions

Hamsters are very active pets. They love to run and play, so it is important that the cage is spacious. The minimum recommended dimensions for a medium-sized hamster: 30?50?30 cm. If there are several hamsters, then the cage should be larger.

The size of the cage depends on the type of pet: its size and lifestyle, whether it prefers to live in company or alone. Before you buy a cage, make sure it fits him.

  • Form cells

The height of the cage is not important for hamsters, the main thing is space. Two- and three-story cages are ideal for these pets. Tiered structures provide room for movement, as well as the ability to install many wheels, ladders and other toys for hamsters to make their life really happy!

  • Rod material

Cages can be made from wood, plastic, metal, and combinations thereof. The best choice is metal. It is easy to wash, it will not deteriorate under the influence of moisture and disinfectants, it will last a long time and with high quality.

Glass containers (eg aquariums) are not suitable for keeping hamsters! They have poor ventilation, an unpleasant smell quickly appears, and cleaning is very inconvenient. Your pets in such a “house” will be stuffy and uncomfortable.

  • Pallet

But the pallet is better to choose from plastic, solid and retractable.

It is painful for hamsters to walk on the mesh floor, as their paws are very sensitive. A solid pallet solves this problem. And if, in addition, it is still removable, then it will be much easier to clean the cage. Plastic does not retain unpleasant odors, it is easy to wash (just rinse).

  • Partitions

If the cage is large, the partitions included will be an added advantage. With their help, you can create safe sections for cleaning.

  • Locks

Hamsters only look small and fragile, but in fact they are the master escapers. To prevent your beloved pet from getting into trouble, all doors in the cage must be firmly closed, and the lid must be securely fastened. Do not neglect this point, because it is dictated by sad statistics!

A cage is not only a house for a hamster, but also a guarantee of its safety! Approach your purchase responsibly.
