The water dragon is a lizard common in China, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries of Southeast Asia. Biologists call it Physignathus cocincinus. This is a fairly large species, males can reach a length of one and a half meters, taking into account the tail. When creating the right living conditions, keeping the terrarium clean, the life expectancy of an agama can be 20 years.

Lizards usually choose warm places for themselves near water bodies. They can often be found on the banks of rivers and lakes, where they bask in the sun. Reptiles often climb branches, and are especially active during the day. Agamas swim well and even know how to run on water – at the first sign of danger, they can jump into a pond and quickly run away from their pursuer. An interesting fact is that these divers can spend up to 25 minutes underwater.

The water agama is well suited for keeping at home. The reptile has a friendly disposition, makes good contact with a person, quickly gets used to the owner.

Some individuals may be naturally timid and not immediately given to hands. It is important at the first meeting with them not to show rudeness and aggression. The animal does not like being grabbed abruptly or making loud noises. Therefore, it is worth being especially careful in the first days of keeping so that the lizard does not begin to see you as a threat.

It doesn’t take that long to tame. The main thing that a reptile needs is to get used to your smell and understand that you are not a danger, you are determined to make friends with her.

To keep a water agama, you need a terrarium of a suitable size, soil and decor, special conditions for humidity and temperature.

The terrarium for an adult should be at least 45 x 45 x 90 cm for a female and 60 x 45 x 90 cm for a male. A terrarium with parameters of 90 × 45 × 90 cm will be optimal for one individual or a pair. Since the agamas are very fond of climbing branches, they need to be given this opportunity.

Ground

Keeping a water agama at home would be impossible without the right soil. The lizard loves moisture, so the soil must retain and give it away. Woody soil and moss look beautiful and natural, and cope with the main tasks completely. The best solution would be a paludarium, the bottom of which is filled with water. The agama will swim to cool off and the terrarium will retain high humidity. A paludarium is just as easy to care for as a terrarium.

Terrarium decor

The pet will feel comfortable if there is a lot of greenery around – you can disguise yourself in it. It is best if the terrarium has more well-fixed branches that the agama will climb during the daytime.

Heating and light

Without proper heating of the terrarium, keeping a reptile at home will not work. Here are a few rules for installing lamps and heating:

  • Bottom heating is not suitable for this species. In nature, the lizard sits on a branch most of the time, and receives heat from the sun’s rays.
  • Warm and cold areas should be created in the terrarium. The maximum temperature reaches 35, and the minimum – 22 degrees.
  • The lamp must be placed outside the terrarium so that the animal does not get burned.
  • The terrarium must be equipped with an ultraviolet lamp. It will promote the absorption of nutrients, the production of vitamin D3, the risk of disease will decrease, and the pet will look healthier.

Water and humidity

Since water agamas live near water bodies, you need to create a humidity of at least 60%. Some individuals will be more comfortable at 80% humidity.

To create the right conditions, you need a few simple steps:

  • In the morning and evening, spray the inside of the terrarium with a spray bottle.
  • Install a fog generator, it will maintain humidity up to 100%.
  • You can install a filter in the pond to make it easier to clean up after your pet. Water is changed every few months.

Feeding

At the stage of active growth, agamas are very fond of eating. Feeding is done every day. Reptiles should receive a balanced diet with a high protein content: insects and small rodents. Among the favorite delicacies of agamas are crickets, locusts.

When the pet reaches maturity, you can switch from a daily feeding schedule to a different schedule – about three times a week. Here you will have to take care of providing larger food – mice or adult locusts. Agamas are excellent at defrosting.

Do not forget about the need to add natural vitamins to the diet. They are found in greens and vegetables. It is good if carrots and zucchini are present in the diet of your agama. Although this is an individual situation. Each individual has its own taste preferences – someone is happy to eat salad, others cannot be torn off from strawberries. They do not eat plant foods as often as they do protein.
