 One of the most common diseases of Gouldian finches is the tracheal mite. This disease is dangerous, it is even called the “invisible killer”.The tick enters the bird’s body through contaminated feed. The parasite enters the trachea, multiplies and moves on – into the air sacs. As a result of the destructive activity of the tracheal mite, anemia, pneumonia can very quickly develop in finches, and the result may be the death of the bird. The incubation period is approximately 1 month. 

Symptoms of infection with a tracheal mite in finches

  • Hissing (the bird makes attempts to spit out what is in the trachea).
  • Labored breathing.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • There may be coughing and shortness of breath.

 

Treatment of tracheal mite infection in finches

However, do not panic: you can get rid of the disease. Most often, drugs based on ivermectin are used to treat tracheal mites in finches. The drug is drawn into a syringe and applied 1 drop to the skin of the neck (from the back) – on the right into the cavity in the vein. After 10 days, the procedure is repeated. However, ivermectin has a side effect, so it cannot be used 2 weeks before reproduction and during reproduction. In addition, you should not carry out such processing more than 1 time in 3 months.
