The water in the aquarium changes color: what to do?

You launched the aquarium of your dreams and settled fish in it, but then the aquarium water gave you an unpleasant surprise: did it turn brown, green, or smell strange? Fortunately, everything is fixable. We will understand the causes of deterioration in the quality of aquarium water and offer options for solving the problem.

If the water turns green

The flowering of water is expressed in a change in its color to green. This is a signal about the reproduction in the aquatic environment of unicellular algae, photosynthetic protozoa. Provoke their growth can be an abundance of light, direct sunlight, an excess of nitrates in the water. If the water in the aquarium turns green and cloudy, this indicates that it does not meet the required parameters.

Make sure the aquarium is out of direct sunlight. Even if exposure to sunlight is excluded, daylight hours in the aquarium should be reduced. See what kind of plants adorn your aquadome, how many are there? Wouldn’t six to eight hours of daylight be sufficient for them?

Check if you are overfeeding the inhabitants of the underwater world. Anything that is not eaten within a few minutes will slowly decompose and pollute the aquarium.

The water in the aquarium changes color: what to do?

Always have drip tests or test strips on hand Tetra Test 6in1 to determine the quality of water. Do a 10-20% water change at the end of the test.

Water conditioner (Tetra AquaSafe) must be added to the fresh water for the aquarium. The water conditioner neutralizes impurities that can harm the inhabitants of the aquarium. It will not be superfluous to add preparations for the aquarium containing beneficial bacteria. This way you can send reinforcements to the bacteria that are already fighting to keep your aquarium clean. Among modern effective preparations for the care of the aquarium there is also an algae remedy (for example, AlguMin). Read the instructions carefully and add the amount of product that corresponds to the volume of your aquarium.

The water became whitish and opaque

Whitish water in the aquarium indicates a lack of beneficial bacteria in the water and the rapid multiplication of those bacteria whose active presence is undesirable. This is possible in the first weeks after the launch of the aquarium, when the internal ecosystem has not yet fully formed. It is possible that the reason is too frequent serious water changes (it will be enough to change about 20-25% of the total volume of water in the aquarium once a week). Too thorough cleaning of the filter may be the culprit. As a result, metabolic products are not properly processed in the aquarium, nitrites and ammonia accumulate, which are harmful to aquarium fish. Therefore, if the water ceases to be transparent and fog seems to envelop it, it is time to act, to restore biobalance.

Check the equipment, whether the filter works well, whether there is aeration. Conduct a census of the aquarium population. Is it tight for the fish? Isn’t it time to put some of them in a separate water house? Check if you are overfeeding your pets, leftover food on the bottom is a sure way for bacteria to thrive. But what exactly should be at the bottom of the aquarium is a dense layer of fine soil. The thickness of the soil layer should be at least one and a half centimeters.

Modern technologies allow you to quickly restore the necessary microflora in the aquahouse. It is better to immediately arrange a double salvo – capsules with a substrate for the rapid settlement of bacteria Tetra Bactozym and water conditioners with a liquid culture of beneficial bacteria Tetra SafeStart or FilterActive.

Brown cloudy water in the aquarium

Turbid water in an aquarium with a putrid odor, brown in color, indicates improper care, overfeeding of fish, overcrowding of the aquarium. Almost all the oxygen in such an aquarium goes to trying to break down excess organic waste, so the fish also suffer from a lack of oxygen. If an aquarium in such a deplorable state fell into your hands, it is urgent to clean the water in it before it comes to trouble.

Transplant some of the fish from the overcrowded aquarium into a new one. Feed the remaining fish in moderation. Check if the equipment is working. How will you save the fish if, for example, the filter is broken?

Follow the schedule of partial water changes, in your case, changes should be done at least once a week. It is extremely important to prepare the water before pouring into the aquarium with a special conditioner. Look out for aquarium water conditioners designed specifically for such emergencies (Tetra CrystalWater). Such a preparation is able to make the water in the aquarium clear again in a few hours.

An effective means of improving the environment in the aquarium – capsules with bacteria and enzymesTetra Biocoryn. This method will help in a short time to break down organic contaminants in the aquarium, that is, to neutralize one of the main causes of unpleasant odors and brown water.

The water is clear but brown

Great news – your aquarium is in order! Brownish or tea-colored water is most often caused by acids found in snags and peat. Some aquarists deliberately put more driftwood and leaves in the aquarium so that the water acquires the color of the Amazon waters and the South American cichlids can feel at home. The water in the aquarium is clear and clean. But if you do not like the tea color of the water, we will show you how to fix it.

Don’t forget weekly water changes. Make sure that the external filter has activated carbon for aquarium water, replace it every two to three weeks. Use conditioner to improve water clarity Tetra CrystalWater.

Finally, I would like to emphasize that any sudden change in water parameters will be stressful for the fish, so it is better not to take the situation with the deterioration of water quality to the extreme. Make it a habit once a week, on the same day, to carry out all the necessary procedures for the care of the aquadom. This will help to always keep it in order and make the life of your fish prosperous and happy.
