Terrarium for eublefar: which one to choose and how to equip it correctly

If you are thinking about acquiring a eublefar, then first of all it is important to create the right conditions for life – after all, the health, general condition and mood of your future pet depend on them.

Eublefaras are considered the easiest and most unpretentious in care and maintenance in comparison with other reptiles. These are very peaceful and clean geckos, great for both beginners and experienced terrarium keepers.

Terrarium

First of all, you need to decide on the type of terrarium and size.

Terrariums come in different types: horizontal, vertical and cubic. All of them serve as a home for different types of reptiles, some of them are important height, and someone – length.

For eublefar, you can choose any of the above, while maintaining the correct length and width parameters, however, it is preferable and more rational to choose a horizontal type.

In a vertical terrarium, there will be an empty height that can be equipped with various ladders and islands that the gecko can climb. Make them as safe as possible so that the eublefar does not slip and fall, resulting in injury.

The standard comfortable parameters of a terrarium for one individual are 40x30x30cm or 3-5 sizes of an adult animal. For keeping several – you need to add a minimum of 10-15cm per gecko.

Why is it important to keep the correct size?

For the growth of a teenage eublefar, the correct size of the “house” is very important. In a too cramped home, the gecko may become stressed, which may cause refusal to feed and subsequently stop growing. Eublefar will remain small, and this is fraught with other problems.

Eublefar is quite active and mobile, and the correct size of the terrarium will be an excellent support for its activity. In a comfortable quality terrarium, the animal will feel safe and free, having the opportunity, for example, to hunt insects in a short chase.

Can a fish tank be used?

No. An aquarium is a structure that does not allow water to leak, and, accordingly, air, which must necessarily circulate throughout the space. In the aquarium, the air stagnates, which will harm the pet.

Ventilation

Pay attention to the ventilation in the terrarium: it is best if it is carried out at the top on one side of the terrarium, and at the bottom on the other. This will maintain the best air exchange.

We have decided on the terrarium, but what’s next?

Heating

One of the corners of your terrarium should have a “warm-up point” – this is the place where the leopard gecko warms up and digests its dinner.

Heating is carried out with the help of a thermal carpet or a thermal cord, it must be placed under the terrarium, in no case inside – there is so much chance of at least a burn (this also applies to heated stones, they are not suitable for eublefar due to the same possible problems). The power of the thermal carpet is 5W or 7W – this is completely enough for a gecko.

The warm-up point should be up to 32°C. To control the temperature, you can purchase a special thermometer for reptiles, so you will be 100% sure that you have lined everything up correctly.

You can choose a place for heating yourself: put it under a shelter, a humid chamber or in an open area, but it is best to choose one of the corners of the terrarium so that a smooth temperature gradient is maintained. So, the background temperature in the entire terrarium should be 24-26°C, and the warm-up point should be 32°C. Eublefar himself chooses in which temperature range it is better for him to rest.

Ground

A baby or teenager up to 6 months old is recommended to be kept on a green reptile mat. In the presence of fine soil, the baby can accidentally eat it, which is fraught with digestive problems.

When choosing any loose soil for an adult eublefar, purchase it only at an exotic animal pet store, so you can be sure that the soil does not contain debris and harmful impurities. Such soils can be: shell rock, mulch, sand, wood or coconut shavings, etc.

With loose soil, it is recommended that the animal be fed in the “jigging box” so that at this moment it does not accidentally eat a piece of it.

Shelter

Eublefar must have a place to rest in the shade – it can be some kind of grotto or stone of various shapes and materials. Cork bark or coconut cover is perfect, they will look very organic in the terrarium. Additionally, you can place small snags, stones and decorations, with them your gecko’s walk will be even more interesting.

Wet chamber

Eublefar needs a shelter with high humidity – where he can cool down, rest and provide himself with an easy removal of molting. This can be either a ready-made humidity chamber, or a prepared shelter with a bed of sphagnum moss, a regular cloth napkin, or a coco substrate.

Drinker

It is important for geckos to maintain water balance, so be sure to put a small drinker with clean water. If it is not prepared, the eublefar may become dehydrated.

Lighting

Eublefars are twilight animals, so they do not need additional lighting, and it is enough to get the necessary vitamin D3 from vitamins on feeding days.

If you want to equip the terrarium with a lamp, you can use ReptiGlo 5.0 – so vitamin D3 will still be synthesized under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. This is especially necessary for the prevention and treatment of rickets.

You can also put a night lighting lamp – its light is not visible and does not interfere with the eublefar, unlike an ultraviolet lamp, and you can watch your pet even at night.

calcium and vitamins

At home, eublefar needs good calcium for the growth and development of bones, and a complex of vitamins for the proper functioning of internal organs. You need to choose additives that are suitable only for reptiles. They should be given at each feeding in a different proportion.

Separately, you can put a small bowl of pure calcium (without vitamins) in free access so that the eublefar can eat it on its own.
