Teaching your dog to shut up on command

If your dog barks too much, you can train him to be quiet on command. How to do it? We offer step by step instructions.

  1. If the dog is barking, say “Quiet!” (or “Chshshshsh”, or any other word you choose – the main thing is that the word is always the same).
  2. Show your dog a treat.
  3. The dog, smelling the delicacy, will be silent.
  4. Praise the dog.
  5. Give her a treat.

In the future, when the dog starts barking, she will know that after the word “Quiet!” (or “Shhhhhh” or whatever you choose) she gets a treat. And in anticipation of a treat, the pet will fall silent.

You can then increase the time between the word “Quiet” and the serving of the treat. And then move on to variable reinforcement.

You will find a lot of useful tips on raising and training dogs in humane ways in our video courses.
