Origin story

The ancestors of the Serbian hound, which is believed to have been bred in the 18th century and survived almost unchanged to our time, were dogs taken by merchants from Asia Minor. These dogs since their appearance were mainly used in the Balkans for hunting wild boar, deer and hare. The breed was first described at the beginning of the 20th century, and the first standard dates back to 1924. But the International Cynological Federation first adopted the breed standard only in 1940, and these hounds were then called Balkan. However, in 1996 the name was changed to Serbian Hound.

Description

Typical representatives of the breed are described by the standard as medium-sized, strong and temperamental dogs. The body of the Serbian hounds is taut, with a strong neck and loin, the paws are high, muscular. The head has a slightly pronounced stop, the muzzle is wedge-shaped, slightly shorter than the skull in length. The nose of the hounds is wide, always painted black. The ears are set high, of medium length and width, hanging on the sides of the head, close to the cheekbones. The color is acceptable from yellowish red to rusty and “red fox”, with a black cloak or saddle. At the same time, blackness, according to the standard, should reach the head and form two black marks on the temples on both sides. The standard also allows a small white spot on the chest (no more than 2 cm).

Serbian hounds perfectly combine friendliness and reliability, lively temperament and perseverance. These dogs are ready to chase game for hours and at the same time do not mind playing with the owner and his children.

How to Keep Serbian Hound

Serbian hounds are healthy and hardy dogs that do not require special care or special dietary selection to avoid, for example, allergies. However, they, like any other dogs, need to be dewormed in time , treated for fleas and ticks, and vaccinated . And, as is the case with all dogs with floppy ears, be careful not to develop otitis due to water or dirt.

Content

Representatives of the breed need physical activity, and it would be cruel to deprive them of hunting, which brings great joy to the hounds. So the ideal option is to keep these dogs outside the city, in a house with a plot. Hounds can live both directly in the house and in warm enclosures. It is better not to introduce them closely to cats.

Price

Despite their undoubtedly excellent working qualities, Serbian hounds are practically not found outside the Balkans. But in their homeland, these dogs are highly valued by hunters and quite popular. However, most likely, you will have to personally come for a puppy or pay for its delivery, which, without a doubt, will raise the cost of the dog.
