Self-plucking and eating feathers

Self-plucking and feather-eating in parrots – Is an anomaly of behavior that manifests itself in pecking at oneself, plucking feathers and often in eating them. The reasons for self-plucking and eating feathers in parrots can be different. For example, too high or low temperature, excessive or insufficient light or air humidity, infrequent bathing, malnutrition, loneliness, stress, etc. Another group of causes are parasites, fungi and viruses. If you cannot identify and eliminate them yourself, consult a specialist. Some owners put a “collar” made of plastic or cardboard on their pet, which does not allow the bird to pinch itself. Sometimes the “collar” remains on the parrot for months. However, remember that it also interferes with normal eating. Therefore, if you resorted to this method, hang the feeder and drinker as close to the perch as possible. When the feathers are fully grown, the “collar” can be removed. However, in any case, this method does not eliminate the cause of self-plucking and eating feathers in parrots. Finding and fixing it is your job. Otherwise, the parrot will begin to pluck itself again.

In case of parasitic lesions, veterinary diagnostics and prescriptions will be required.
