Description of the pink-breasted ringed parrot

The pink-breasted ringed parakeet is a medium-sized parakeet with a body length of about 33 cm and a weight of about 156 grams. The plumage of the back and wings is grassy green with olive and turquoise hues. Sexually mature males and females are colored differently. The head of the male is gray-blue, a black stripe runs from the eye to the eye through the cere, under the beak there is a large black “whisker”. The chest is pink, with olive spots on the wings. Beak red, mandible black. Paws are grey, eyes are yellow. In females, the entire beak is black. 8 subspecies are known, differing in color elements and habitat.

The life expectancy of a pink-breasted ringed parrot with proper care is about 20 – 25 years.

Habitat and life in nature of the pink-breasted ringed parrot

The species lives in northern India, southern China and Asia, on islands east of India. Rose-breasted ringed parrots in nature live in small flocks of 6 to 10 individuals (rarely up to 50 individuals) at an altitude of about 1500 meters above sea level. They prefer open forests, dry forests, humid tropical bunk forests, mangrove, coconut and mango thickets. Also agricultural landscapes – parks, gardens and agricultural land.

Rose-breasted ringed parrots feed on wild figs, cultivated and wild fruits, flowers, nectar, nuts, various seeds and berries, corn cobs and rice. When feeding in the fields, up to 1000 birds can gather in flocks and cause significant damage to the crop.

Reproduction of the pink-breasted ringed parrot

The nesting season of the pink-breasted ringed parrot on the island of Java falls on December – April, in other places they can breed almost all year round. They nest in the hollows of trees, usually 3-4 eggs in a clutch. The incubation period is 23-24 days, the female incubates. Rose-breasted parrot chicks leave the nest at about 7 weeks of age.
