APPEARANCE OF THE ROCK RED-TAIL PARROT

A parakeet of medium size with a body length of about 2 cm and a weight of up to 70 g. Both sexes are colored the same. The main color of the body is green, the forehead and crown are dark brown. The area around the manhole up to the cheek is green, and the neck has a scaly pattern with gray-white edging and brown inside. The shoulders are bright red, the tail is brick red below, green above. The periorbital ring is naked and gray-white, the eyes are brown. Paws are gray, beak is gray-black. Two subspecies are known, differing in habitat and color elements.

Life expectancy with proper care is about 15 years.

HABITAT AND LIFE IN THE NATURE OF THE ROCK RED-TAIL PARROT

The species is distributed in the western part of Brazil, the north of Bolivia, in the northern, eastern and central parts of Peru. They live at an altitude of about 300 m above sea level in tropical rainforests. Sometimes they fly into the foothills of the Andes. Outside the nesting season, they usually gather in flocks of 20-30 individuals.

They usually feed under the forest canopy. The diet includes seeds, fruits, berries, and sometimes insects.

BREEDING ROCKY RED-TAIL PARROT

The nesting period is February-March. Usually there are up to 7 eggs in a clutch. Only the female is engaged in incubation for 23-24 days. The chicks leave the nest at the age of 7-8 weeks. Hybrids are known in the wild with green-cheeked parrots.
