Relatives: Pakarana

Dinomys branickii – the only species allocated to this family resembles a pacu. Its body length is about 70 cm, tail – 20 cm. There are 4 fingers on the legs. Its fur is dark brown with white strokes on the sides. In its structure, it occupies an intermediate place between pigs, packs and hutias. Inhabits rocky areas of the eastern slopes of the Andes, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. This rodent lives in forested areas. It feeds on greens and fruits of plants. Like many other rodents, when feeding, it holds food with its front paws. The female gives birth to two cubs. The lifestyle of this rare animal is almost not studied. 

Pacarana was first found in 1872 in the courtyard of a small Peruvian town, lost among dense forests. Then nothing was known about her for a long time.
