Rdest hard-leaved
Hard-leaved pondweed, scientific name Potamogeton dentatus. The plant is native to East Asia (Japan, Korea). In nature, it grows in swampy reservoirs, forming dense surface thickets.
In favorable conditions, the plant forms a tall stem, usually reaching the surface of the water at depths of up to a meter. The leaves are arranged alternately on the stem – one per whorl. The leaf blade has a lanceolate shape, the surface is dotted with pronounced veins that create a mesh structure. It is fixed at the bottom by a creeping rhizome.
The plant is not demanding on external conditions, feels great in a wide range of temperatures and values of hydrochemical parameters. A high level of illumination is important. The introduction of fertilizers is usually not required if fish and / or other aquatic organisms are kept, which are a natural source of organic matter.
Due to its rapid growth and large size, Rdest hardifolia is not suitable for small aquariums. Recommended for use in large tanks and open ponds. Dense floating clusters lead to shading, so light-loving plant species should not be placed on the lower tier. Reproduction occurs by the formation of new shoots from the rhizome, or by cuttings.
