Brief information

  • Aboriginal breed;
  • Purebred dogs are rare even in their homelands;
  • Another name is the Polygar Greyhound.

Character

The Rajapalayam (or Polygar Greyhound) is native to India. The history of this aboriginal breed goes back hundreds of years. However, experts, unfortunately, cannot answer the question of what her true age is. It is also impossible to determine the origin of the breed.

It is known that in the 18th century, the Indians used Rajapalayams as fighting dogs, animals even participated in wars, and in peacetime they guarded houses and farms.

By the way, the name of the breed comes from the city of the same name in the state of Tamil Nadu, where these dogs are especially popular.

Today, the Rajapalayam is considered a rare breed. A purebred individual is difficult to meet even in her homeland. To save the greyhounds, the National Kennel Club of India, together with the authorities, is conducting a campaign to popularize local breeds.

Rajapalayam is a real hunter, hardworking and diligent. They went with him to hunt wild boar and other big game. There is a legend about how several polygar greyhounds saved their master from a tiger during a hunt.

Behaviour

However, Rajapalayam is not a typical hunter: he also has developed protective qualities. These dogs were used by farmers: the animals protected the plot from predators and thieves. For this reason, greyhounds do not trust strangers, are wary of guests in the house and are unlikely to make contact first. But, if the dog was socialized on time , there will be no behavioral problems.

Rajapalayam is multifaceted, he can become a worthy companion. Representatives of the breed were kept by privileged families of aristocrats. So with children, dogs are affectionate and gentle, they can tolerate pranks and sometimes do not mind joining the children’s fun themselves.

They do not perceive the neighborhood with cats very well – the instincts of the hunter affect. Yes, and Rajapalayam will be friends with relatives only if he is peaceful and good-natured.

The Polygar Greyhound is a hardy breed. She is not afraid of heat or cold. Like many native dogs, they are distinguished by good health. However, some individuals, due to genetic characteristics, may be deaf. In addition, pets with a tendency to allergic reactions are often found among representatives of the breed.

Rajapalayam Care

The short coat of the Rajapalayam is minimally cared for: during the molting period, the dogs are combed out with a brush once or twice a week. The rest of the time, simply wiping your pet with a damp hand or a rag is enough to remove loose hairs.

Equally important is the care of the dog ‘s claws . Depending on the activity of the animal, they are cut a couple of times a month.

Conditions of detention

The Poligarian Greyhound is an energetic dog that does not fit the lazy life in a city apartment. Yet more often pets of this breed are kept in a private house, where they have the opportunity to walk and run in the fresh air.
