Why does a puppy whine during the day and at night?

There can be several reasons why a puppy whines, both during the day and at night.

  1. Adaptation to a new place and associated anxiety. A two-month-old puppy is a small, defenseless creature. He was used to familiar surroundings, the company of his mother, brothers and sisters, but suddenly he was torn away from them and placed in a new environment, where, moreover, there are unfamiliar creatures. How can you not worry? Often a puppy who has got into a new house whines at night, especially in the early days.
  2. Fear. Sometimes the puppy whines in fear, for example, when he sees an unusual and frightening object. As a rule, in this case, the baby tightens his tail and tries to run away or cling to the owner’s legs.
  3. Boredom. Sometimes the puppy whines during the day (and even sometimes at night) because he is simply bored. After all, before he had the opportunity to play with other puppies, but now he is all alone, especially if the new owners spend the whole day outside the house.
  4. Pain. Sometimes the puppy whines because it hurts, for example, he jumped off the couch, fell from the hands of a child, or injured himself.
  5. Hunger. A hungry puppy, of course, will whine, because he feels serious discomfort.
  6. Reinforcement from the owner. If you pay little attention to the puppy, but immediately run to him as soon as he whines, the baby will very quickly learn to whine to get your attention. In this case, it is the owners who teach the puppy to whine.

  1. If the problem is anxiety related to adapting to new environments, but you need to be patient and wait it out, while providing a good living environment for the new household, providing the optimal combination of predictability and variety, and also encouraging the correct behavior of the puppy. As a rule, after a few days the puppy gets used to the new family and stops whining. To ease the adjustment period, you can ask the previous owners for something that smells like home (for example, the puppy’s favorite toy or bedding).
  2. If your puppy is whining in fear, calm him down. And, of course, spend time competently socializing your pet, getting to know the world.
  3. To keep your puppy from whining out of boredom, it is important to provide him with toys and give him as much attention as possible when he is not whining.
  4. If there is even the slightest reason to believe that the puppy is whining in pain, you need to examine it and, if necessary, contact the veterinarian.
  5. To prevent the puppy from whining from hunger, feed him often and little by little. A two-month-old puppy should eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, and water should be available at all times.
