Protein food for parrots
Protein food (food of animal origin) is extremely important for a parrot. However, remember that it cannot form the basis of the diet. Protein feeds are used only as an addition to the main dish, in order to provide the body of a feathered friend with substances that are absent in vegetable feed.
Protein feeds are given to parrots no more than 2-3 times a month, and during molting, preparation for nesting and raising chicks – every day. If you use animal feed, consider their features:
- Protein feeds deteriorate quickly, especially in the heat, so they are given exactly in the amount that the parrot eats at a time.
- Protein feed is given in a separate feeder, previously cleanly washed.
What protein foods can be given to a parrot?
- Chicken eggs. The yolk contains vitamins A, D, E, K, as well as approximately 70% organic matter. The protein contains approximately 30% of organic substances, as well as B vitamins. In addition, a chicken egg is a storehouse of important macro- and microelements: magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, sodium, chlorine, iron, sulfur, boron, iodine, bromine, etc. .d. The egg is boiled hard-boiled, peeled, rubbed on a grater. They are fed both in the form of mixtures (with beets or carrots), and in pure form.
- Fish oil is a source of vitamins A and D, phosphorus and iodine. Please note that fish oil is stored only in the refrigerator, but even there the contents of an open container deteriorate after a few days.
- Fat-free cottage cheese is a great way for the bird’s body to “get” protein, vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, calcium and lactic acid. However, keep in mind that only crumbly fresh cottage cheese will do.
- Gammarus and mealworms are also great options. In nature, parrots will occasionally feast on insects and will appreciate your attempt to diversify their diet with tasty and healthy food.
