Origin story
A breed with a fairly long history, but not widely used, and absolutely undeservedly. The Epanyol-Pont-Audemer breed was bred in northern France as early as the 17th century. Initially, these dogs were hunted in swampy areas, but thanks to their perseverance, endurance and gambling, these spaniels have proven that they can do the job both in the forest and in the open.
According to one version, the Irish Water Spaniels , which were crossed with local dogs, stood at the origins of the breed. According to another version, the Spanioli-Pont-Audemer descended from the Old English Water Spaniel. There are also suggestions that the Picardy Spaniel , Barbet and Poodle may have influenced the breed . Despite good working qualities and recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale , the breed has never been very popular, even in its homeland. And now there are very few of these beautiful, unusual-looking dogs left.
Description
Typical representatives of the breed have a very remarkable appearance, which is associated primarily with wool. So, the standard stipulates that with a rather narrow and long muzzle, long, low-set ears that hang freely on the sides of the head, and small eyes with an intelligent expression, these spaniels must necessarily have a kind of wig. So, a bunch of long curls of wool should be located above the forehead of the dog, long curly hair also grows on the ears. At the same time, on the muzzle itself, the hair is short and tight. Spagnol-Pont-Audemer is a medium-sized dog, proportionately built. The chest in typical representatives of the breed is deep and wide, the croup is slightly sloping. The loin and neck are well muscled.
The color of the coat is specified by the standard as chestnut – solid or piebald. Mottled chestnut or chestnut gray is preferred. The nose of dogs should also be brown.
Character
Epanyoli-Pont-Audemer have a calm, friendly character. They get along remarkably well with people, even small children, and are well trained . At the same time, these dogs show excellent results in hunting: they are hardy, have excellent instincts, are fearless and love water.
Pont-Audemer Spaniel Care
Typical representatives of the Spaniol-Pont-Audemer breed do not require laborious and expensive care. However, owners need to comb their six regularly, especially on the ears, and also monitor the condition of the auricles. Since these dogs are happy to climb into the water, you need to make sure that wet hair does not fall into tangles and inflammation does not develop in the ears.

It is better to start these dogs for residents of country houses, passionate hunters, however, the Spaniel-Pont-Audemer may well live in a city apartment if he is provided with long active walks.
